Don’t Lose Your Wonder

Psalm 65:5–8

By awesome deeds you answer us with deliverance,

    O God of our salvation;

you are the hope of all the ends of the earth

    and of the farthest seas.

By yourstrength you established the mountains;

    you are girded with might.

You silence the roaring of the seas,

    the roaring of their waves,

    the tumult of the peoples.

Those who live at earth’s farthest bounds are awed by your signs;

you make the gateways of the morning and the evening shout for joy.

Psalm 65 describes people standing in awe of God’s wonders. The mountains, the seas, the morning, and the evening all become reminders that God is present and active in the world.

It can be easy to lose that sense of wonder. We become accustomed to the world around us. We become accustomed to church. We can even become accustomed to God. What once amazed us becomes familiar.

But God has not stopped working simply because we have stopped noticing.

Wonder begins when we pay attention again. Instead of trying to explain everything or fit God neatly into what we already know, we open ourselves to the possibility that God is bigger than our expectations. Today, look around. Pay attention. Where is there goodness? Where is there beauty? Where is something being restored? Where is someone experiencing grace?

God may already be at work right in front of you.

God, open my eyes today. Restore my sense of wonder and help me recognize where you are already at work. Amen.
