Prolepsis | We Shall Be Like Him | 1 John 3:1–3 How much does your past determine who you are becoming? Sigmund Freud taught us to look backward—to recognize that our past experiences continue to shape our present. Abraham Maslow invited us to look forward—to imagine the person we have the potential to become. There is truth in both. But the Christian hope offers something more. We are not merely the product of what happened to us. And we are not left to invent the best version of ourselves. Our future has a face and a name: Jesus Christ. In 1 John 3, we are given this remarkable promise: “When he is revealed, we will be like him.” That promised future changes how we live right now. The Christian life is lived in proleptic anticipation—allowing God’s coming Kingdom to break into the present. Because reconciliation is coming, we practice forgiveness now. Because peace is coming, we practice peace now. Because all will be welcomed, we practice hospitality now. Because scarcity and greed will be no more, we practice generosity now. Your past has formed you. Your potential may inspire you. But ultimately, Christ is your future.
