We Shall Be Like Him

Scripture: 1 John 3:2

“Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is.”

Who are you becoming?

Our culture offers plenty of answers.

Become successful.

Become independent.

Become your authentic self.

Become everything you have the potential to be.

But John gives Christians a surprisingly simple answer:

We shall be like Him.

That is our future.

Christianity does not ask us to invent the person we want to become. God has already shown us what humanity looks like when it is completely filled with His love.

It looks like Jesus.

And here is the beautiful part: John says that future is already beginning.

“We are God’s children now.”

Something about who we will one day fully become has already broken into who we are today.

This is prolepsis—living according to a future that has not yet fully arrived.

We know where the story is going.

We shall be like Him.

So we can begin living like Him now.

Reflect

When you imagine spiritual growth, what are you trying to become?

How would your answer change if your primary goal were simply, “I want to become more like Jesus”?

Prayer

Jesus, you are not only my Savior; you are my future. Free me from trying to invent myself. Shape my desires, my relationships, my habits, and my character until they increasingly resemble you. Amen.
