The Past Is Present
Scripture: Psalm 139:23–24
“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my thoughts. See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
None of us arrives in the present empty-handed.
We carry people with us. Experiences. Relationships. Successes. Failures. Things that were done by us and things that were done to us. Even when we aren’t consciously thinking about the past, it has helped form the people we are today.
That means there is value in looking backward.
Sometimes we need to ask why certain situations make us defensive. Why we crave someone else’s approval. Why we keep repeating a destructive pattern. Why something seemingly insignificant produces such a strong reaction in us.
But there is an important difference between allowing the past to explain us and allowing the past to define us.
“This happened to me” does not have to become “This is who I am.”
God can meet us in everything that has formed us—even the painful chapters—and begin the work of redemption there.
Reflect
What from your past still seems to show up in your present?
Where might God be inviting you to move from simply understanding your story toward allowing Him to redeem it?
Prayer
God, search me and know me. Help me see the ways my past continues to shape my present. Give me courage to face what needs to be faced without allowing it to define me. Take every part of my story and redeem it through Christ. Amen.
