Put On Christ

Romans 13:13–14

Let’s behave appropriately as people who live in the day, not in partying and getting drunk, not in sleeping around and obscene behavior, not in fighting and obsession. Instead, dress yourself with the Lord Jesus Christ, and don’t plan to indulge your selfish desires.

The most important detail about the wedding garment is this:

The guest was not expected to provide it himself.

The host provided what was necessary.

That changes the entire meaning of the story.

The guest is not rejected because he is poor, unprepared, or unable to afford the proper clothes. The king had already supplied what he needed.

The tragedy is that he refused to receive it.

Paul uses similar language when he says, “Put on the Lord Jesus Christ.”

The Christian life is not about manufacturing enough goodness to deserve a seat at God’s table.

God supplies the grace.

God supplies the invitation.

God supplies what we need to become the people He calls us to be.

Our response is to receive it—to allow the grace of Christ to clothe and reshape us.

Grace welcomes us as we are, but grace does not leave us untouched.

Reflect:

Where are you trying to produce in yourself what God wants you to receive from Him?

Pray:

God, thank you that I do not have to make myself worthy of your table. Clothe me in the life of Christ and transform me by your grace. Amen.
