Remember Who Started the Work

Philippians 1:3–6

I thank my God every time I mention you in my prayers. I’m thankful for all of you every time I pray, and it’s always a prayer full of joy. I’m glad because of the way you have been my partners in the ministry of the gospel from the time you first believed it until now. I’m sure about this: the one who started a good work in you will stay with you to complete the job by the day of Christ Jesus.

When Paul thinks about the church in Philippi, he begins with gratitude. He remembers their partnership, their faithfulness, and everything they have experienced together.

But ultimately, Paul's gratitude isn't directed toward them.

“I thank my God every time I remember you.”

Paul recognizes something underneath all those years of ministry: God has been at work.

That's an important way to remember our own past. We can remember the people who taught us, prayed for us, encouraged us, served alongside us, and helped shape our faith. We should be grateful for them.

But beneath all those people is an even deeper reality.

God was there.

And that's why remembering God's faithfulness gives us hope for what's next. We don't have to know exactly what the future holds because the God who began the work is still working.

Where can you look back and recognize that God was at work, even if you didn't see it at the time?

God, thank you for the people and experiences you have used to shape me. Help me recognize your hand in my past so that I can trust you with whatever comes next. Amen.
