Remember So You Can Keep Going

Psalm 77:11–14

But I will remember the Lord’s deeds;     yes, I will remember your wondrous acts from times long past. I will meditate on all your works;     I will ponder your deeds. God, your way is holiness!     Who is as great a god as you, God? You are the God who works wonders;     you have demonstrated your strength among all peoples.

Pilgrims remember differently than tourists.

Tourists preserve memories so they can look back and say, “I wish we could go back.”

Pilgrims remember because sometimes they need the strength to keep going.

When Frodo felt like he couldn't continue his journey, Sam reminded him of the stories they had heard growing up—stories about people who encountered darkness, persevered through difficulty, and somehow made it through.

Those stories weren't an escape into the past. They gave them courage for the present.

Our memories of God's faithfulness can do the same thing.

Remember the season you didn't think you would survive.

Remember the prayer God answered.

Remember the person God brought alongside you.

Remember the door that opened.

Remember the grace that somehow proved sufficient.

We don't remember because we're trying to get back there.

We remember because the God who was faithful then is still faithful now.

The road ahead may be difficult. But you've been on difficult roads before.

And God was there.

Reflect What story of God's past faithfulness do you need to remember today?

Pray

God, remind me of the ways you have carried me before. May remembering your faithfulness give me courage to continue following you today. Amen.
